Bethanne’s journey as an art quilter from her beginnings making traditional quilts, then branching out into pattern manipulation, to her current pictographic silk art quilts is explored with a slide presentation and with a trunk show of available quilts. (Bethanne will bring all the show quilts that are currently home at the time of the lecture, which will vary). Bethanne will explore how her silk quilts come to be, from initial sketches, paintings, photography to final creation and finish details. Additionally, Bethanne discusses how any quilter can learn to recognize inspiration and document and organize it to facilitate quilt design through sharing her own techniques and sketchbooks.

Quilted Texture from A to Zen

Traditional free motion background fillers are a wonderful starting point, but what happens when you let yourself be influenced by natural patterns, everyday objects, macro photography, and the art of Zendoodling? Be inspired by Bethanne’s fresh take on backgrounds, with inspiration from every letter of the alphabet, perfect for filling those big open spaces of more modern quilts! Hands on classes are suitable for experienced free-motion domestic quilters.

The Devil is in the Details

Sometimes the difference between a show quilt and an AWARD WINNING show quilt is in the details. On the judging floor, one point is often all that separates a contestant from a winner. Bethanne will share her unique finish details which have been proven winners in shows across the country in her quilts. Students will make a sample that features beaded bias appliqué, beaded piping, swag piping, beaded knife edge binding as well as an introduction to the use of Derwent Inktense pencils. Take your quilting to the next level with masterpiece details!

Kit Fee: $25.00 Includes pre-quilted square, all beads, piping, ink, and activators for the project.

Before I tell you about Melinda’s quilt journey, I want everyone to know about the tragedy that struck Melinda and her family. It was this Spring when the Camp fires broke out in California. Melinda’s newly built home and possessions were destroyed. Her husband had time to save computers and quilts! We are so fortunate to have Melinda come and share her talent and artistry with our guild.

Melinda has been in love with fabric all her life and knew when she was 16 years old that she was going to be an artist, which became her major in college. She worked in the interior design field for 15 years as a fabric and wallpaper designer. She and her husband, Joe, started their own wallpaper and fabric design business in 1988. The company, Melinda Bula Designs, sold their hand silk-screened wallpapers and fabrics nationwide.

Since 1996, she has been involved in quilting and wearable arts. Her sense of color and design has won her numerous awards for both quilts and wearable arts.

Her Fabulous Fusible Flowers quilts are unique. With the wonderful look of a painting, she uses fabric and thread to create beautifully artistic quilts. She has been lecturing and teaching, both in the United States and internationally, which she really loves and has been featured on The Quilt Show. Creating and designing is an obsession with Melinda and whether it is fabric, wallpaper, or quilts, it is her passion. She has written 2 books on her Fabulous Fusible Flowers technique, Cutting Garden Quilts and Candy Cane Lane, both published by the Martingale Company.

Melinda has had the honor of exhibiting her quilts in some amazing venues like the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, Quilt Expo en Beaujolais in France, International Patchwork Festival in Sitges, Spain and at the Texas Quilt Museum. In 2013 the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky bought Melinda's quilt "And Our Flag was still There!"

Edyta's love for fabric began at a very young age - when she used her mother's drapes to create her first fabric project! Fortunately for all of us, Edyta's mother recognized her passion for fabric and thus began her journey with fabric and sewing. One of Edyta's biggest blessings is her marriage to husband Michael. She not only fell in love - she was introduced to a Sitar family tradition of quilting by her mother-in-law Carol and grandmother-in-law Anna.

Quilting has enabled Edyta to express herself about the objects or occasions of her surroundings - her designs are her avenue to release passion! "My children and my husband are my greatest motivation. This is the Cinderella dream for me. Being able to do what I love and share this love with others is the greatest feeling and reward I could imagine!"

The combination of inspiration, a love for fabric, a keen eye for color, and her family teachings blended into the recipe for a talent in constructing amazing quilts, creating innovative quilting patterns for Laundry Basket Quilts, designing beautiful traditional and batik fabrics for MODA and stunning threads for Aurifil. She has published five books to date, been featured in magazines world-wide, and her quilts have been honored by receiving many awards.

As the founder and owner of her company, Laundry Basket Quilts, Edyta is proud to carry on her family tradition that fabrics and threads have seamlessly stitched together through the generations. Her true passion and quilter's spirit shine through her classes, workshops, and presentations. She travels all over the world sharing her experiences and connecting with quilters of all levels through the inspiring stories about the quilts she makes.

Edyta Sitar will be your guide on a walk through historical, political, and personal events that have inspired generations of quilters. In her presentation, Edyta reflects on quilters' work and how they find inspiration to create, to express, and to mark milestones in their lives. The program is full of historical information as well as touching personal stories that many quilters can relate to. She brings along a large collection of quilts (over 50) that will entertain and inspire guild members. She hopes to inspire you with many reasons to continue to create and enjoy quilting even more than you do now.

School has started which means it’s time for us to collect donations for the PISD School-Age Parent Program. This program assists Plano students and their families dealing with teen pregnancy. The program accepts items such as: receiving blankets, small quilts, baby clothes, diapers, or other baby related items. Simply bring the items to the September guild meeting and give them to Kaye Dunn. Thank you in advance.

Trae Flesher, a new guild member, has stepped up to lead the Saturday Community Service Sit and Sew. Thank you Trae! Due to a scheduling conflict at the Best Little Retreat Center in Texas, the September date will be Saturday, September 28 ( it is usually the 3rd Saturday of the month). Please let us (Trae Flescher, Linda Neal or Kaye Dunn) know if you plan on attending so we will have enough community service projects to work on. Just bring your sewing machine, basic sewing supplies, and a “can do” attitude. We are hoping to add new members to this Community Service sponsored sewing day. This is a great way to meet other guild members and sew at the same time!

FYI- Even though our meeting location in September has changed- we will still have a table for Community Service. We always have quilts that need quilting, binding, pillowcases, etc. Hope to see you there!

I would like to thank everyone who made a Red and White block for the 2020 Guild raffle quilt. Fellowship in Scarlet received a 2nd place. Great work everyone! The Wednesday Girls small group put the quilt together and Richard Larson did a beautiful quilting job. Valerie Salter did the binding. It hung well at the show and looked beautiful! Pictures and more information is on the guild website. Raffle tickets will be coming soon. The winner will receive 2 quilts: Fellowship in Scarlet AND Little Red (quilted by Pam Wingate- Thank you Pam!)

Our September meeting will be my last meeting as President of Quilters Guild of Plano. I wanted to say thank you for all the support you all have given me these last two years. It has been such a pleasure to see our Guild grow and thrive. Quilt Plano 2019 was a great success and none of it could happen without all of you. Please don’t forget that our September meeting location has changed. We will be meeting at Collin College, Spring Creek Campus, in the Living Legends Conference Center. We not only will have an amazing speaker, but we will be voting in your new slate of officers to continue leading this great Guild! See you then.

The August meeting was at the Plano Event Center for preview night. The center was full of members.

The Quilt show membership table was a success. Sue and Carole would like to thank the volunteers who worked with us.

We signed up 34 new members, 10 returning members and 61 renewals. That equals 105 members. There were several who took membership forms and are going to mail them or bring to the next meeting. The Credit Card machine was such an improvement.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the September meeting.

First and foremost I want to thank Barbara Collins for being my rock, my right and left hand and the best Show Coordinator a person could ask for. WOW, what an amazing show it was! It was great to see everyone come together and volunteer, share their love of quilting, and see all the beautiful quilts into the show. Final numbers are still coming in yet I can tell you that we had record high attendance and Credit Card sales showed that this was a great move for the guild and our fundraising efforts. The committee Chairs, their co-chairs and all the helpers just made the show look easy. Thank you all for letting me be your show chair for the year. I am excited to volunteer next year yet will leave the Chair position in the very capable and talented hands of Donna Petrick.

The Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is a way of recognizing people who go over and above to help others. Since 2009, the Quilts Guild of Plano has been recognizing members who have acquired at least a 100 volunteer hours during a year. The awards are honored with a letter from the U.S. President and a bronze (100-249 hrs.), silver (250-499 hrs.) or gold pin (500+ hrs.)

In previous years we were able to log our hours on the QGP website. That is no longer possible. But you can download a simple spreadsheet from our website for tracking your hours by using the link below to go to Guild Forms and then clicking on the Volunteer Hours Reporting in the Guild Forms menu:

You can then enter your hours by typing in the spreadsheet or you can just write your hours in by hand.

If you logged your hours on the website from January 2019 – March 2019 these hours have been deleted with the change to the new website. Please try to recoup these hours and add on to them.

In January you may turn your hours into Julie Schaefer and she will order the awards for you.

The member-only side of the website contains all Guild Documents and a Member Directory.
