LETTER FROM GUILD PRESIDENT – Jeanne Vogel

QGP President, Jeanne Vogel

Dates to mark on your calendar:

June 2–  Board meeting

June 10–Sew Day 10-2

June 12– Guild meeting

June 12– Last day to enter a quilt into the show

June 19–Quilt Plano 2025 layout meeting

July 8—Sew Day 10-2

July 10–Guild meeting–with nomination of new board members

Never undervalue the difference you make and the lives you touch with a quilt.

What a feast of fabric we had! Many did a personal destash of their sewing rooms adding to the piles of donated fabric that cleaned out the overflowing Community Service storage unit–affectionately called “the shed”. If you want to get involved in a great team–or we’re making it a village–this is the time to step up. Every step to make the quilts with just a few hours of your time and talent as we give quilts to comfort those in stressful times.

As quilters we need to do our best to lead a zero-waste and eco-friendly life, but our plans to mold our scraps into dog beds have gotten to a point that Community Service spends time and energy getting the beds ready for delivery. We have a stash of heavy fabric to make into  dog beds, (which we can continue to have some young sewers learn to sew a straight stitch), we want to bow out of handling the collecting, hauling, stuffing, cutting up large pieces, sewing shut and the delivery of the dog beds to various shelters throughout the county.  We are now only giving out the empty dog bed cases. You can fill them and take them to any vet’s office you have in your neighborhood. The ones we have been to are quite pleased to take them.

– Jeanne

Please, won’t you join us?

Nominating Committee 2025 – Chair Roxy Gross

The Nominating committee has been hard at work trying to fill the important positions available on the Board for the upcoming year.  Many, many thanks to everyone who has said yes. Your time and commitment to the guild is greatly appreciated. The leadership role of the members serving on the Plano Board is crucial to the success and future growth of this very active guild.

You are wanted & needed!!

Help continue the fantastic, fun work of the Quilters Guild of Plano Board.

We still need some members to step up and take the following positions for next year:

VP Membership (1), VP Guild Activities (2), VP Community Service (2), VP Finance (1).

Our goal is to have the following Board positions held by a 2-person team that can share the duties, responsibilities and time commitments of the position.

  • VP of Membership. Christi has agreed to continue her position as VP of Membership. A second member is a great help in greeting members & visitors and keeping important membership records.
  • VP of Guild Activities. Introducing new activities, fun projects and quilting trivia to our members is a great way to help develop skills and bring members together. Fun job!
  • VP Community Service. This is a major purpose of our guild. We have an active team of members willing to make quilts and other items needed for our various charities. Organizing these activities is vital not only to meet our charity status, but to the many people who depend on our help.
  • VP Finance. A second person is needed to help Stacey keep all the financial records required for our guild.

If you have any questions, need more information or better yet, want to join the rest of the Board team, please contact either Roxy Gross (roxygross6@gmail.com) or President Jeanne Vogel. We need to fill these positions by the end of the June Meeting. Don’t delay!!

GUILD ACTIVITIES

Bones tables filled with fabric, fat quarter raffles with 5 lucky winners, membership gift bags. Fabric everywhere!  Excitement, friendship and camaraderie galore! What more can a guild member ask for!  May’s meeting was wonderful ~ we sure hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

During the meeting, we asked if guild members would be interested in working with community service on a mystery bag challenge and quite a few of you rose to the challenge. Think: Community Service has bins of fat quarter sized (+ or -) storage containers separated by color. Think:  Guild Activities is in need of another activity before our term 🙁 comes to an end. So we’re going to combine forces and create bags of the same colored fabric and you will add one different color from your stash to create a quilt (think lap size). We hope to have this ready in the next few months so there is plenty of time to join in on the fun!

Speaking of Guild Activities ~ we are still in need of two people to spearhead Guild Activities when our term ends in October. It’s a great position to hold. You plan activities and then implement them so members can sign up to participate. What have we done during our term — the Stained Glass Challenge, Holiday Swaps, Fat Quarter Lottos, a few Mystery Quilt Challenges, to name a few. Add to that a few games/quizzes that we hold during the meeting and it’s all fun and games! How much time does it require? We have signup sheets for the activities, generate mailing lists so we can send information to participants.

If you are new to the guild, please don’t be nervous about signing on for the position. Chris was new and it was a great way to meet all the members. Please step up and participate!  Thanks!

Chris & Anna Marie

PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS

What an information packed program at the May meeting with the Show Committee educating us on all the do’s, and don’t and inside scoops of what it takes to put on our fantastic Quilt Plano Show each year. What amazing volunteers we have to accomplish that year after year!

In June, Christa Watson arrives to educate us on how to be productive in our OWN sewing space with our OWN domestic sewing machines quilting our OWN tops!  Who knew we could do that!  (Well I have confidence in you, so get signed up for the workshops!) If your pile of unfinished tops keeps growing, and you don’t want to “quilt by check” with them all, GET SIGNED UP FOR THE BOOTCAMPS! You spend too much time, talent, and $ to let all those tops languish in the closet. Did I mention, GET SIGNED UP!  This is your chance to get help from a nationally known quilter on how to move those tops along.

Spots are filling, so don’t keep saying “I’ll do it tomorrow” and lose your slot to someone else. Sign up fully on the website, or email us at programs@qgplano.org  to request we add your name to the list.  Then mail us a Registration Form (available on website) or turn it in at the June meeting.  See you there!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

May has been a whirlwind… We have been crazy with donations the past several months of beautiful fabrics and supplies. Thanks to all that have donated and/or passed the word to others. It helps in keeping our mission successful and provides us the ability to make great gifts for those in need of some kindness!

Want to be part of the team?  We invite you to join our community service fellowship dedicated to spreading kindness through the art of quilting.  Our mission is simple: to create quilts and quilted items that provide comfort and warmth to those in need, and foster a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for quilting and compassion for others.

How can you make a difference one stitch at a time?

Can you donate at least 6 hours a month to lend a hand helping prepare projects, sort donations, cut kits, deliver quilts to our destinations and just have fun and sew with us?  We would love to have you.  Our work space in Plano at the Storage Star is working out so well and it enables us to work together as a group…which we all love!  Good Friends working together to “Give Back” to our community.  We typically meet for one “workday” a month. If you would like to join us, let us know and we will add you to the communication list.

Community Service Sew Day:  Always the second Tuesday of each month held at the Plano Sewing Center from 10 until 2.  Please join us.  All you need is a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies and we will provide the rest doing what we love to do…SEW.

Grab and Go Projects:  Perfect if you are unable to participate in person.  Grab and Go can be finished at home on your schedule. We appreciate any help you can provide. Plus, it is a great feeling to be able to be part sharing a little kindness with those in need in our community.  All the Grab and Go’s can be picked up during the quilt meeting or at the CS sewing day. Simply pick up this month and complete and return next month.  Items include:

  •  Quilts to be quilted:  Complete with top, batting and backing ready to quilt.
  •  Quilts to be bound:  Complete with binding and a QGP label to be attached.
  •  Quilt tops to be completed:  Quilt kits pre-cut or may just need to be completed.
  •  Cuddle kits: quick and easy, all parts included.
  • Pillowcase Kit: Pre-cut kits ready to be assembled.

We need to discuss Dog Beds:

Everyone has done such a great job recycling their scraps and filling dog beds that we have become overwhelmed.  We ask that you fill your dog beds, sew the case shut and drop them at the closest animal shelter, rescue or veterinarian office/clinic.  We are happy to continue to supply the dog bed cases as long as we have fabric available to make them, but we can no longer handle the collections or delivery of the beds.  You can still count as your volunteer hours. Please let us know how many and where you drop them by simply emailing  the information to communityservice@qgplano.org and we see that it gets logged in.  Thank you in advance for helping us continue this program by delivering “your” dog beds in your local area.

As in all successful endeavors, It takes a “Team and a Village” with everyone doing their part to accomplish great things.  We couldn’t do it without you!  Thank you…Thank you …Thank you for all you do!

April/May Delivery Update:

Late note:the following donations were delivered for Community Service in April:

  • April 12 to Pioneer Place (Community House) — 25 Adult Throws with Pillowcases
  • April 14 to Children’s Health Plano — 28 Children Quilts, 10 Pillowcases, 20 Cuddles
  • April 14 to PISD School-Age Parent Program — 27 quilts/blankets, 22 pk wipes, 15 pk diapers, 14 outfits, 1 playpen pad, 1 large box gently used clothing, bottles, toys & pacifiers, 2 parenting books, 9 (diaper) bags, 2 curling irons, 10 baby formula, 10+ toys and books.  The donations for PISD were incredible.  In total, we collected 606 diapers!

QUILTS OF VALOR

Here’s an update of last month’s plea for Quilts of Valor tops. We need about 15 more quilts for the fall. These large quilts are more fun as teamwork — recruit your small group, gather up your sewing cousins, etc. A top should be 60” – 70” by 80” – 90”.  Please try to avoid flag fabrics and patterns designed to look like a flag as some, not all, honorees will find those disrespectful of the flag.

All ten of the sampler block kits were picked up at the May meeting. I can’t wait to see the completed blocks in July.

A mega thank you to the ladies who donated Quilts of Valor tops in the last month. And, ongoing appreciation to the long-armers who took work home. We all know that completing the top is just the first step—it still needs to be quilted, bound and labeled. Most of the tops need to be finished before the Show, which will still mean we are asking a lot from the long-armers. Expect to hear begging for binding help all summer!
