We’ll show you some behind the scenes so you will be a wonderful volunteer at the show! We’ve got a job for you! Come and meet some of your peers and get to know one another.

UPCOMING BOARD POSITIONS

The present board has several members that have done a great job working together to accomplish our goals  (while having fun!) and now want to share our knowledge with those taking on the next year’s term. Call the present board member and you can shadow her these next five months and have an easy transition to the new board starting in October.

Nominating Committee 2025 – Chair Roxy Gross

It’s the time of the year when we look to the future of the Quilters Guild of Plano. We are a very active guild with a wide variety of opportunities to enjoy and promote quilting knowledge and education. Many thanks to the current and past Board leadership for giving of their time and talents to help the guild grow and expand.  Won’t you help carry on with the tradition?

I am thrilled to say we have a fabulous nominating committee of active members that are eager to put together the slate for the 2025-2026 Board by June. According to the Bylaws the Nominating Committee has 5 members plus a representative from the current board and 2 alternates: Roxanne Gross, chairman (805.857.8788), Fran Levy, Sally Pitre, Beth Smietana, Caryn Schniederjan, Donna Petrick (Board rep) and alternates Janet Carver and Deanna Tucker.

If you are interested in a Board position, you will find information about the duties and responsibilities of each position in our Bylaws and Policy & Procedures on our website. Please take a look and see what position fits your talents the best. Did you know that most of our VP positions are filled by 2 people? Talk to a friend and sign up together. Not ready for a Board position? There are plenty of committees that could use your time and expertise. And lastly, if a committee member contacts you, please say yes! We know that you will enjoy your time on the Board.

MAY MEETING SPECIAL DRAWING

Sunshine & Shadows

The Quilters Guild of Plano was organized in the fall of 1982 by Ginny Kenney and Nancy Vencevich, former members of the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas. They met at a small group meeting and discovered they were both from Plano. At the time, the trip to Dallas for the meeting was more of an undertaking, so they decided to see if others in the Plano area were interested in meeting in each other’s homes. By advertising in the Plano Star Courier, they found enough interest to start the “Happy Hoopers.” By the end of the first year, they had enough members so that they could no longer meet in individual homes. In May of 1986, the group officially adopted the name Quilters Guild of Plano. In 1989 the Guild became incorporated as a 501(c)3 tax exempt educational organization.

Sadly I got notified from the brother of one of the Quilters Guild of Plano’s founders that Nancy Vencevich passed away on April 6, 2025 at the age of 81. So, doing my math she would have been 38 years old in 1982 with 3 children when she embarked on starting the guild in Plano. Her family is very proud that she started this club and that it continues on! 43 years and counting!

Christa Watson: How Do I Quilt It?

June Workshops

Friday, June 13: Walking Foot Bootcamp

     Saturday, June 14: Free-motion Bootcamp

Quilts, curtains, splashers, and aprons!  Wow! What an amazing variety of Redwork samples Rosie deLeon-McCrady had to share with us at the April meeting.  Fun continued Saturday as we modern day ladies used our domestic machines to create beautiful redwork pieces.

Domestic machine skills will continue in our June workshops.  We have heard many times “I wish I could quilt my own tops on my own machine, but I don’t know how.”  Well now’s your chance to learn!  Christa Watson is visiting us from Las Vegas to teach you these coveted skills. She’s a pro at using the walking foot or free motion foot on her regular sewing machine to finish her own quilts.

Her bootcamps are filling up quickly, so don’t wait if this is a skill you’d like to dabble in.  Sign up on the website, in person at the May guild meeting, or print a registration form off the website and mail it to the address on the bottom.  (You do need to purchase a copy of her book to use at the workshop, so don’t wait till the last minute).

See you at the May guild meeting!

GUILD ACTIVITIES

Wasn’t the April meeting so much fun! We had 19 ladies show off their stained glass quilts and each one was absolutely amazing!  Congrats to challenge winner Deanna Tucker – it was definitely a well-deserved win!

Deanna Tucker

Don’t forget to bring in 1 or 2 fat quarters for the May fat quarter raffle in spring prints or spring tonals. Wewill raffle off a bundle or two or three (depending on how many we receive). You will receive a raffle ticket for each fat quarter you provide (max of 2).

Please, please reach out to us if you are interested – but unsure – about taking on the Co-VP spot for guild activities when the next term begins in October!  It’s a fun position as you get to facilitate activities for members to participate to enjoy. A mystery quilt, fat quarter raffles, a yearly guild challenge, holiday exchanges are just a few of the activities we provided during our term.  You create the activity and members choose to participate. It’s fun to be involved – even if you’re new to the guild as it’s a great way to meet people.

EDUCATION

COMMUNITY SERVICE

We have had an amazing month!  Quilts created, quilts quilted and quilts bound.  Thanks to all that lend a hand helping to make our quilted gifts for those in our community in need of a little kindness. We couldn’t do what we do… without your help.

Reminders:

  • You are invited to Sew Day, the second Tuesday of the month at the Plano Sewing Center from 10 until 2.  Just bring a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies and we will bring the rest. We have a great group and are always happy to have a few more!
  • We have a Workday coming up on Tuesday May 6th from 10 until 4 prepping projects for the following May and June. We could use a few extra hands. If you are interested, please contact us for details.
  • Grab and Go:  For those wanting to help but unable to join us on Tuesday, no problem, as we have Grab and Go Projects.  They can be picked up (and dropped off) during our 2nd Tuesday “Sew Day” or at the guild meeting.  We have kits to make, quilts to quilt, quilts to bind and more. We have something for everyone that is interested in helping provide comfort to those in need in our community.
  • It takes a Village! Please consider joining our Community Service Team and be part of something special.  Such a great way to meet new friends creating quilts and quilted gifts, all while doing what we love to do…SEW.

QUILTS OF VALOR

I was honored to make the QOV presentation in April to three of our veterans, all purple heart recipients. The men and their families were very appreciative of our efforts and participation in this program. One of the wives shared several of her pictures with me.

I have chosen two to share with you–I wanted you to see the veterans so they would be real to you. I had six quilts for them to choose from because Carolyn Cosgriff made sure all had the labels prior to leaving town. Multiple quilters contributed to these six quilts. I know we are all pressed for time and have our favorite people to give our quilts to, but please spend a little time and make a special quilt for these worthy veterans.  They gave up so much for us.  We can give up a little time for them. Make a beautiful quilt.

–Donna Petrick

There are so many servicemen and women deserving of a Quilt of Valor!  We currently have over a dozen people waiting. Please support the effort by participating in the May Community Sew Day.  Fabric and pattern will be provided. Or, recruit some buddies to make a top on your own.  The guidelines are 60 – 70” by 80 – 90”.  Tops without flag fabric are preferred as some recipients are very sensitive to flag protocol.  Vibrant red, white and blue patterns are popular. The guild has generous long-armers willing to donate their time and talent.  Finished quilts are welcome, but not necessary.
